Lightning!

On Friday I am doing a lightning talk at the WLA (Washington Library Association) annual conference. I have to be interesting and memorable. I have to summarize an almost completed project of considerable complexity in 5 minutes and, if possible, look eminently hireable while doing so.
No pressure, ya know.

I will be honest— I totally have a fantasy one or more hiring librarians will watch the presentation and say to themselves, "Self, we need to hire this person immediately!"

I am aware that it is not a LIKELY scenario, but a gal's gotta have some dreams, dang it!

'Course, could always be that it happens but the library is in Pend Oreille (pronounced 'round these parts as "pond-or-ay") county, which really is not in my desired locations list.

Anyway, that's a thing I'm doing this week.

Job hunters anon

This is me and two of my fellow students at a job fair. Job hunting ranks among my leastest favorite things in the whole of the world. We only look happy because we were on our way to get a drink.

Track, meet 1

Thing Two competed in the triple jump, long jump, and the 100 meter today.
He beat last season's PR and was generally faster, taller, stronger, and more coordinated.
Yay!

I was also introduced to his friend, who is a girl, but it is all very low-key, of course.

Ahhh, so cute.

I am about to start my final term of library school which means I have started job hunting.
Golly is THAT demoralizing.

Live Long and Prosper.

Things I learned from Spock~
Not agreeing with people can, in fact, be an act of friendship.
Whales are important, also, they are not the hell "your" whales.
Computers are excellent servants, but I don't want to serve them.
Vulcans might never bluff or lie, but they do exaggerate, make errors, and omit.
Being logical doesn't mean you don't kick ass as necessary.
Unexpected stuff is fascinating.
Function can be beautiful.
Insufficient information is dangerous.
Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end.
Sometimes the needs of the one do outweigh the needs of the many.

83 trips around the sun is pretty good, and he got to do so much of the stuff he loved. I think he really did live long and prosper. He was flashing an Orthodox Jewish blessing gesture when he did that Vulcan salute and it is now one of the most internationally recognized gestures of goodwill— something beautiful in there somewhere.

The wonder of blogging

This blog started in September 2005, when I was 34.
Today marks the events of me turning 44.
Wow, I've been doing this a long time.
You know what else I've been doing a long time?
Breathing.
Holy crap...
44 years.
That is kinda awesome. I think I am almost to the age where I can call everyone hon and officially give up on trying to learn names, which I suck at anyway.

See ya later, hon!

Fun times in Seattle

Sooo, this last Friday Thing Two and I went and had fun in Seattle. We went by the library where I work, because it is a gorgeous building and a good place to bring first-time visitors to the town and we just happened to have one of those with us.

My friend Lime warned me that her first-born would be coming this way and I immediately signed on to play tour guide. Diana was charming, good company, and had a long list of local sights she was hoping to visit. We managed to get to quite a few of them, plus some extras I think are important. The visit to the Fremont troll also means a visit to Lenin and Just Desserts— of course.

The Seattle Center has changed a little since I last brought Thing Two there.
Tragically, the beignet vendor was GONE! Ooooh, the humanity.
Anyway, Thing Two was talked into doing silly poses for me.

While Diana went and toured the Space Needle, Thing Two and I went and looked at purty glass art.
 For the next photo;
insert a maniacal laugh and some crackly electrical noises

There were lots of glass things...
 in a variety of configurations.
We are having some gorgeous sunny days around here so we enjoyed the gardens quite a bit.

The glass place is pretty close to the needle so I felt it necessary to try and get everything in one shot.
We also went to the EMP where there was an exhibit about the costumes of Star Wars.
This shows the progression of Senator Palpatine to the evil emperor.
There were lots of super geeky facts and behind the scenes things that were AWESOME.

This is but a small sampling of the 50ish pics I took.
:p
Thing Two and I really enjoyed ourselves, as did Diana who decided she needed to schedule a Star Wars movie marathon soon. Other things were seen and other things were done but that is all I have time to discuss today. The stern master of homework is demanding my attention again.
May the Schwartz be with you.
